MATCH REPORT: Centurions 16 – 48 Rebels

Rebels continue solid start to the season with win over Exeter

Cornish Rebels took last weekend’s fine form on the road and raced to a 0-38 lead after a rampant first half against South West Cup holders Exeter Centurions.

Rebels vice-captain Jack Scott’s offload found Liam Freeman to grab the first of the day, before Dillon Loake showed great pace on the far side to grab his first try for the club. Freeman converted both before Captain Jamie Prisk’s strong running was rewarded with a pair of tries. Lee Gaskell touched down under the sticks to score his third in two games before Pete Mabbott’s sidestep got him over the line as well continuing his fine form in the centre.

Sam Bristow made his first appearance of his fourth season with the club, and capped a skilful performance with a well-deserved try down the far flank. In the final move of the first half Rebels threequarter Decarlo Trerise took full advantage of the overlap to grab the last score before the break.

The second half was less clean-cut for the visitors. Showing glimpses of their first half performance from a week previous, when a brighter Devon Sharks make them defend for long periods whilst the Rebels wasted possession. The error count was no better here as attempts to open the floodgates resulted in a solid period of control for the Centurions. Wes Keywood and Ryan Lee scored tries converted by Stef Archer either side of one from hooker Scotty Diack which wasn’t.

Despite the valiant effort from an improving Cents squad the final try was a fitting end to a solid away performance from the champions as Prisk speculatively launched the ball out of the back door and after hanging in the air it fell to James Wilson who finished the move safely in the corner.

All South West Mens League clubs will enjoy a break next weekend before the Rebels welcome North Devon Raiders at Redruth on June 4th.
