Rebels too strong for the Navy in first Armed Forces Day clash.
Greenmount Sponsored Cornish Rebels RLFC celebrated victory this Armed Forces Day as they defeated Royal Navy Rugby League at Camborne’s Recreation Ground after a hard-fought, physical encounter.
A dropped ball from the kick-off saw the Rebels defending a full set of six inside their 20 metre line but once they got into opposition territory skipper Martyn Lawrance latched onto the ball and dove into the corner for the opening score.
The next score went to the hosts again, this time through centre James Martins interception who despite Paul Saberton’s last ditch tackle, managed to reach over after a 60 yard dash.
After some mounting pressure the Rebels were awarded a scrum and they spread the ball out wide quickly to find James Martin again. The Rebels were looking good value, but as they couldn’t find the conversions they were better than the 12-0 scoreline would suggest.
The fourth try came through Rebels prop Andrius Zachorouvas who put in a massive shift alongside fellow front-rower Ash Crouch, as he found himself in space just a few yards out and ran through to touch down under the sticks. This time the conversion came from Jamie Prisk.
The Navy responded though through Ryan Scott, but Sam Carter missed the kick and it wasn’t long before Zachorouvas hit the Navy line 5 yards out and took two defenders with him as he crashed over to the right of the uprights for another Rebels try.
Navy fullback Paul Saberton marked a standout performance for the visitors with the first of his two tries just before the break, finding space from a few yards out and scooting through the defenders. The kick was good this time from Carter putting the score at 24-10 at the break.
A scrappy start to the second half saw errors and penalties from both teams break up the game, but after a couple of stoppages for injury and back to back penalties for the Navy Paul Saberton broke the deadlock on 53 minutes with another great use of space to finish off a fine passing move from the Navy.
The Rebels soon got back into their groove and Sam Rhodes received the ball in space out wide after a sweeping move down the right was switched back across the field to create the overlap.
Navy winger Luke Savage pulled one back for the Navy but with the final stages approaching the Rebels reacted quickly from their own scrum and immediately found wing Jodi Briskham who wasted no time in racing down-field to nab the last Rebels try of the day.
The final score however went to the Navy as centre Kieran Hart went over in the corner, but again the kick was missed.
